Planned city - lively city: Bookstores with cafés are usually "intellectual islands" in the city structure. However, a bookstore can at least be a haven of peace and "antithesis" to exclusively profit-oriented sales areas. Big profits are not in the foreground and are not expected. In the planned urban expansion area, however, the thirst for knowledge of people and their communication behavior in the sense of peaceful coexistence are promoted with such islands.

N E X T  D O O R (Nebenan) is developing a pilot project to support such islands. The longer-term goal is to create a new, dynamic model of self-organization, engagement and participation. Ultimately, it is about the quality of sojourn in the city, especially in public and semi-public spaces in the context of normal subsidized housing.

Urbanity can arise through a variety of facilities that can be used in a communal way. They can be co-designed in participatory processes right from the beginning. Noteworthy here are shared kitchens, co-working spaces, a laundrette, communal terraces or children's play areas on the flat roof. The topic of "kitchen gardening" is also in focus here - raised beds can be found here as well as roof gardens and a glasshouse. Another special feature is the "lent shop", in which, for example, tools or children's clothing are lent to the residents. The creation of a cultural association, which acts for the entire project area, complements the wide range of leisure activities with a further community activity.
