>> A community like a small village. People with highly diverse needs live together in individual forms of housing. People with and without disabilities showing a high degree of mutual respect and tolerance. Life affirming, open-minded towards others and anything new. Willing to be an active part of a community. This is 'Apfelbaum' - a village in the city. <<
Quote from the project's website
Inclusion as a social attitude.
Apfelbaum is a visionary real estate project. It is the objective of the project to function as a counter-model to exclusion and displacement by instead focusing on inclusion as a social attitude. Inclusion aims to ensure that all people in a society live together as equals, in a community in which no person is excluded. Every person is a recognized part of society, regardless of origin, disability, sexual orientation or age.
The village in the city.
The project Apfelbaum - Inclusive Living and Housing in Hernals focuses on the compatibility of living environments of people with and without disabilities and is engaged in exemplary neighborhood development in a Gründerzeit block. The project aims to promote self-determined life for people with and without disabilities. It wants to enable residents to grow older in their familiar surroundings or in their own homes, even though personal living conditions may change significantly. For this purpose, a variety of living and working possibilities with many communal areas are being developed.
A diversity of offerings ensures affordability and inclusion.
In a densely built-up Gründerzeit area in Vienna-Hernals, an innovative and inclusive living space is being created on around 12,500 m² of floor space. Using existing structures, a building complex will be erected on a campus that extends over several plots of land. Various forms of housing are planned, such as family apartments, single apartments, assisted living, co-living or shared apartments. Thus, a high degree of social mixing is achieved. The use of housing subsidies ensures the affordability of the apartments. There will also be commercial premises, a children's group, studios and a health center - an asset for the entire district.
Self-determination by participation.
Centrally located in Vienna's 17th district, the building complex comprises several plots within one building block. The different types of housing as well as the social and commercial infrastructure create a new social neighborhood in the old building stock of the Gründerzeit.
The IBA_Vienna 2022 supports Apfelbaum in the implementation and communication of the innovative and exemplary project contents, so that the project's potential for integration and inclusion of people with very different framework conditions can be made as effective as possible.
