Ich brauche Platz! is an art and space research project that was carried out in cooperation between the Institute of Art and Design at the Vienna University of Technology, KÖR - Art in Public Space and the IBA_Vienna in several phases and at different locations. A public transport bus converted into a multifunctional space served as the "research base".
From October 2019 to October 2020, the bus stopped in three IBA neighborhoods, namely in the Viennese urban development areas Berresgasse, Neu Leopoldau and Per-Albin-Hansson-Siedlung. Together with students and local youths as well as other local cooperation partners, artists developed demand-oriented and socially integrative art and spatial research activities.
read moreSpatial needs were questioned in playful spatial exploration processes, new forms of spatial perception were set in motion, and different ways of appropriating and designing space were jointly tested in order to explore together what the young people living here think they need space for. In the Per-Albin-Hansson-Siedlung, the focus was specifically on girls; at all other locations, research was conducted with both girls and boys.
The basis and structure for this process, which is initially open-ended, is provided by the Bus Lab Programme, which sets content-related priorities: With formats such as "Grätzlreisen," "Quatschbude," "Schreibwerkstatt," "Kreativlabor," "Körperinszenierung," "Soundtown," "Hands-on-Workspace," "Action Place" and "Open House," children and young people are given the opportunity to participate in the activities on a daily or sporadic basis, depending on their interests.
In the spring and summer of 2020, due to Covid 19 restrictions, the project had to move to Instagram, where young followers were actively encouraged to participate and craft.
More insights about the project can be found on Facebook and Instagram.
In the Per-Albin-Hansson-Siedlung Ost, intergenerational participatory measures were implemented to strengthen the neighborhood, which will be presented in this talk.
In 1989, the United Nations adopted a fundamental treaty on the rights of the child. What impact does this have on the issue of housing and (more) spaces for children and young people in the city?
