Plenty of History and Even More Stories

The housing estate Per-Albin-Hansson-Siedlung in Vienna-Favoriten is one of the largest municipal housing estates in Vienna with a total of over 6,000 apartments and approx. 14,000 residents. The housing estate is considered a prototype of the so-called "social urban planning" after the Second World War and was built according to the model of a "relaxed and green city". It represented an enormous improvement in the quality of living compared to the prevailing housing situation in the still unrefurbished Gründerzeit areas. Since 2017 the district is connected to the Vienna underground network by the extension of the underground line 1 and thus received a new urban dynamism. Demographic, infrastructural and social needs also pose further development challenges.

In order to be able to react to change processes in a functioning district with a long history, IBA_Vienna offers a framework for different actors, in the tradition of "gentle urban renewal", together with the local residents, local stakeholders and on-site initiatives to contribute and get involved in the development of ideas and concepts. In addition to retrofitting along the fields of action mobility, structural improvements, strengthening the local economy, new usage concepts for green and open space are needed, but also improvement of the infrastructure for children and young people as well as the anchoring of additional educational, cultural and social offers.

In the area east of Favoritenstrasse - Per-Albin-Hansson-Siedlung Ost (PAHO) - the measures coordinated with local partners will be implemented, evaluated and checked for their replicability by 2022. PAHO thus becomes a kind of "laboratory for innovations" for large housing estates in the 1970s.
