>> The IBA_Vienna has been an important project partner and disseminator right from the start. It is our concern that the the results of the projects are anchored in the City and its partners and have a lasting effect. <<
Stephan Hartmann, Project Manager Smarter Together
Smarter Together is the joint Smart City lighthouse project of Vienna, Munich and Lyon. It is funded by the EU within the framework of the “Horizon 2020” research program. In selected urban areas, technical and social innovations and innovative processes contribute to sustainable urban renewal. These contribute to achieving the UN climate targets. In addition, on a meta-level, impulses for positive social dynamics are also to be given.
More than 30 project partners from administration, research, industry and SMEs participate in the project. The project comprises a three-year implementation stage (2016-2019) and a subsequent monitoring and evaluation stage (until 2021), which also includes further intensification of the transfer of project results.
Smarter Together is characterized by its holistic approach. The focus is on effective Smart City measures for climate protection and for more urban quality of life—such as integrated building refurbishment, climate-friendly energy systems, e-mobility and innovative information management. “Smarter Together” is currently THE Smart City urban renewal initiative that networks numerous stakeholders.
In Vienna alone, well over 40 individual projects are being realized. These include forward-looking renovation of residential buildings with innovative energy solutions and e-car sharing in the housing complex of the BWSG in Hauffgasse as well as the systematic integration of citizens in SIMmobil, the mobile join-in laboratory of Smarter Together. Also included is a school extension at Enkplatz including four new, smart zero-energy gymnasiums, two solar benches and many workshops with the “Science Pool”. An e-cargo bike can be booked directly at www.graetzlrad.wien free of charge. E-bikes can be rented at Gate 2 of the Vienna Central Cemetery. A new data platform has been created as well. Operational logistics is an important topic at Siemens on Leberberg and at the postal service. In autumn 2017, over 6,000 women from Simmering took part in the mobility game “Beat the Street”. In September 2018, the first WienMobil Station was opened at Simmeringer Platz, which interlinks new mobility offers.
Of central importance are participative processes as well as knowledge management at all levels (peer to peer and so-called governance learning), because the process experiences are to be rolled out across the city and across Europe. The elaboration of business models serves to lay the foundations for the transferability of the solutions developed in the project, be it within the city or on a European level.
Smarter Together is currently the largest EU-funded Smart City urban renewal initiative in Vienna.
