Challenges and potentials of neighborhood initiatives with refugees

For the foreseeable future, flight and migration will remain defining issues in urban development, and especially in social housing. For refugees, finding affordable and adequate housing in cities is a major challenge. However, decent housing and stable neighborhood contacts are a key to successful social participation and also of great importance for integration in the labor market.

Against this background, the international research project MICOLL* is dedicated to the potential of community housing projects and neighborhood initiatives for the long-term integration of refugees. Among other things, the project addresses the following questions, the results of which are intended to contribute to evidence-based migration and integration policy:

How is the situation of refugees perceived in the housing market?

What are the experiences from existing community initiatives with refugees?

What instruments can local policy and the non-profit housing sector use to support such initiatives?

How can opportunities be exploited and obstacles overcome in a cooperative and cross-sectoral manner?

The presentation of central results of MICOLL will be the starting point for a panel discussion with experts from the fields of urban development, housing and integration, who will shed light on the topic from different perspectives. Afterwards, the audience is invited to join in the discussion.

Discussing on the panel:

Johanna Leutgöb (Initiative Gemeinsam Bauen & Wohnen), Ulrike Pilgram (neunerimmo), Alejandro Peña (City of Vienna - Integration and Diversity, MA 17), Manuel Hanke (wohnbund:consult), Richard Lang (Bertha von Suttner Privatuniversität). Moderation: Ernst Gruber
