To neighborhood walk
The project is based on the principles of "solidary living," "clever enjoyment" and "medial design." Solidarity is lived in many ways, be it through neighborhood services or a solidarity fund. But lived solidarity is also expressed in the form of a number of apartments that are given to refugees. Theatre, cinema and concert events take place in the multifunctional cultural space on the ground floor. In cooperation with the artists' initiative "toZOMIA", Okto TV, the Burgtheater mobil, which stages children's performances, and the Stadtkino Wien and other creative spirits, cultural, medial and social life in the Grätzel are actively shaped here.
read moreGleis 21 is a prime example of a jointly developed residential project in the neighborhood. It is located in the heart of the Sonnwendviertel East and has a bridging function in the district. The residential building with its large multifunctional cultural space and the artists' initiative "toZOMIA" including the cultural café "Kaffeesatz" in the ground floor zone form a meeting point for togetherness in the district and far beyond.
The liveliness of the ground floor zone is continued in the residential floors through perimeter arcades and balconies. The arcades serve as open communication zones that can be appropriated by the residents. The modular construction also allows for a high degree of flexibility in floor plans and use.
In addition to private living space, extensive communal areas offer space for shared and individual use: from the communal kitchen to the library and sauna on the top floor to the workshop, studio, fitness room and laundry bar in the basement. Temporary visitors are also catered for: guest apartments distributed over the floors allow short-term living and participation in the daily life of the building group.
Solidarity is lived out in many ways at Gleis 21, be it through neighborhood services or a solidarity fund. But lived solidarity is also expressed in the form of a number of apartments that are given to refugees.
