Köln Kreuzfeld – a new district for Cologne

In the new "Köln-Kreuzfeld" district in the Chorweiler borough, 3,000 residential units and new jobs are to be created on an area of around 80 hectares. In addition to residential use, multiple-use open spaces, social, cultural and educational facilities, as well as a variety of work options are to be created. Particular attention will be paid to infrastructure and climate protection.
read moreIn a mission statement process with public participation, the goals for the new neighborhood were developed and defined together with politicians, administrators and the public: "CONNECT the district, promote EDUCATION, provide HEALTH." Building on this brand essence, six planning offices are each developing an urban planning framework concept in a competitive dialog that spatially represents the development goals for Kreuzfeld.
The goal is to create a new, attractive and networked district in the north of Cologne that also sets new offers for the entire Chorweiler district. The aim is to ensure a sustainable mix of innovative and inclusive forms of housing, work, education, culture and social infrastructure. Likewise, a sustainable mobility structure will be created, taking into account the concerns of open space and climate. The aim is to develop an urban design for Kreuzfeld that combines the building typology, the location of uses, open spaces and public spaces, and the integration of cultural and educational components to create an attractive urban district.
