The "Backnang West Quarter" is to be built on a site formerly used for industrial purposes in the City of Backnang, which has 37,000 inhabitants and is located in the northeast of the Stuttgart urban region. The almost 17-hectare site between Friedrichstrasse and the Murrtal viaduct looks back on an eventful history. Various industrial companies settled along the Murr River as early as the 19th century, and their historic factory buildings still characterize the area today. The development of the area with the integration of the industrial halls worth preserving is a special opportunity for Backnang: A new urban neighborhood with a high density could be created here on an area roughly the size of the adjacent old town.

At the beginning of 2021, the international urban planning competition was won by a design by Teleinternetcafe Architektur und Urbanismus from Berlin together with Treibhaus Landschaftsarchitektur from Hamburg and Buro Happold. The concept envisages a productive and livable urban district with high density, social diversity and a sustainable mix of uses - a "neighborhood for all and everything." The existing factory buildings are to be largely preserved, converted and supplemented with new buildings. They are grouped around landscaped neighborhood squares and "productive courtyards": outdoor areas that combine space for business and deliveries with a high quality of stay. On the lower floors, there will be space for industrial production, for crafts, trades and research, for offices and co-working spaces, social and cultural facilities, communal neighborhood spaces, retail and gastronomy. Above this, there are a wide variety of housing types: community and cooperative housing, cluster and family housing, micro-apartments, adaptable housing for different stages of life, boarding houses, generation houses. A green "ParkMeadow" runs through the entire site along the Murr River, making the river accessible with various elements.
