QuartIer "An der Schanze"

Innovative and affordable housing models in the Donaufeld

The target area Donaufeld has about 60 hectares and is located between the district centers of Floridsdorf and Kagran. The location on the Old Danube makes it one of the most attractive city expansion areas in Vienna.

The first planning considerations for this area took place in the 1990s. In the urban development plan 2005 (“Stadtentwicklungsplan” / STEP 2005) the area Donaufeld was designated as one of the 13 target areas. For this reason the mission statement "stadtklima donaufeld" (“Urban Climate Donaufeld”) was developed.

The mission statement intends to establish an "event chain" between the district centers of Floridsdorf and Kagran. In this central area there should be shopping as well as leisure and educational opportunities. Around 14 hectares. a quarter of the total area, is to be available as public green and open space.

Since 2013, a participation process has been going on in the Donaufeld. The population had the opportunity to participate in the planning process in various formats.

In order to implement the qualities envisioned in the mission statement, a mobility and an open-space concept was elaborated and the urban planning qualities for the central area specified. At the beginning of 2018, the Urban Renewal Office (“Gebietsbetreuung Stadterneuerung” / GB*) was commissioned with district management. As a contact point on site the District Management is present since before the start of construction works and accompanies the convergence of old and new district.

In the first development stage "An der Schanze" about 1,000 to 1,300 flats are to be built. This area will be developed within the IBA_Wien.
