House of Statististics
How can major buildings of post-war modernity be transformed socially, culturally, functionally and technically? The House of Statistics in Berlin (Haus der Statistik) is developing an exemplary project for a social city development.
In the joint event series on "New Social Housing", Az W and IBA_Wien invite international architects and projects that are breaking new ground, this year with the focus on post-war modernism.
The House of Statistics Berlin Alexanderplatz was built in 1968-1970 as the seat of the State Central Administration for Statistics of the GDR and has been empty for over 10 years. A broad coalition of civic city-makers and the district of Mitte want to use the ensemble of approximately 46,000 m2 GFA in a cost-effective and resource-saving manner. In addition to communal living, there are spaces for art, culture, education and commerce as well as the "City Hall of Tomorrow". Representatives of the cooperative ZUsammenKUNFT report on their ideas for a solidary, sustainable, cosmopolitan city and the state of the current workshop process. The House of Statistics is also featured in the Az W exhibition "Critical Care".

IBA meets Architects 12
This time, IBA meets Architects features the architectural duo Flores & Prats. In 1924, the cooperative "Justícia i Pau" built a socio-cultural centre in Barcelona. From the 1980s, the building stood empty until it was given a new lease of life with the conversion by Flores & Prats.
