The Per-Albin-Hansson-Siedlung in Favoriten is one of the largest municipal housing estates in Vienna, with a total of over 6,000 apartments and around 14,000 residents. The settlement, which was built in several phases from 1947 to 1976, is considered a prototype of so-called "social urban development" after World War II and was built according to the urban development model of a "loosened and greened city." It represented an enormous improvement in housing quality compared to the then prevailing housing situation in the still unrenovated Gründerzeit. As of 2017, the district was connected to Vienna's subway network by the extension of the U1 line, giving it a new urban dynamic. Demographic, infrastructural and social needs also pose further development challenges.
