Low-cost living is not only a question of affordable housing. It is also a question of saving on household expenses, sharing resources and a more communal way of life. The GrätzlGenossenschaft is taking up these approaches and from autumn 2019 will enable its members to save costs through shared use and to strengthen social contacts and neighbourly exchange.

The IBA_Vienna supports the research project of the GrätzlGenossenschaft, in which potentials for self-governing networking and local supply structures in Vienna's urban development areas were investigated using the example of the 22nd district, Hirschstetten-Berresgasse. In autumn 2019 the first GrätzlGenossenschaft was founded in Austria.

What is a GrätzlGenossenschaft?

The GrätzlGenossenschaft is a socially oriented, commercial service company which is operated jointly and autonomously by its members. In the GrätzlGenossenschaft, residents and tradespeople in the neighborhood come together to

• support each other in everyday life
• share goods, premises and services
• save costs in everyday life

Since October 2019, the GrätzlGenossenschaft has been visible and present on site: with its own room in the form of a construction container and with offers that are now directed at the local population from the surrounding area even before construction of the new settlement begins.

The opening of another location is currently under consideration.
