Trees make important contributions to combating climate change: not only do they clean the air, they also cool it. Around 70,000 trees of over 400 different species - from plane trees to bird cherries - ensure a good microclimate in the green spaces of Vienna's municipal buildings. Young trees in particular require special care. For this reason, Wiener Wohnen, in cooperation with the neighborhood service wohnpartner, has launched the "Tree Patrons" project: Voluntary residents of municipal housing help with the watering - because the increasingly hot summers put a strain on the young trees, so that the regular watering by the gardeners occasionally is no longer sufficient for proper rooting.
Depending on the capacity and stock in the respective plant, the tree patrons provide one or more young trees with sufficient water. If desired, a plant bed can be created around the tree and shaped with summer flowers of a maximum height of 50 cm. The young trees are supported by wooden stakes, which may be painted with food-safe colors or crocheted to give the tree an individual appearance.
